Thanks for visiting our Facebook site! At River Hills we are re-thinking what it means to be "church" in the 21st Century. I invite you to come with us on this spiritual quest. We realize that many people are interested in spiritual truth, but have tried "religion" and found it wanting. At River Hills we believe that the spiritual truth of Jesus Christ goes way deeper than surface religious activities. We do not diminish the importance of religious rituals and practices; they can give great meaning to one's spiritual journey. At River Hills, however, we are re-thinking the "connect" between religious activity and a vibrant relationship with God through Jesus Christ. So, as one of the founders of our movement, John Wesley, put it, "If your heart is with my heart, give me your hand." If you do not have a faith community, I want to invite you to check us out. Look around the web site and you will see some indication that we get involved in many activities, all designed to grow, feed, and refine our faith. We do not wish to "play" at Christianity or "dabble" in religiosity. We are striving to be devoted and authentic practitioners of Jesus' teachings. Our roots are in God's grace ("unearned love"), and we intend to treat all persons with grace and goodness in the best tradition of Jesus' example. Simply stated, our purpose is and remains, "to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world." Join us in rethinking how we do that in today's world. Two of our junior members of the Missions Committee organized a clean-up day at Cliff Fen Park a few weeks ago. It was rainy, but the group worked hard to take good care of our neighborhood. Thanks to all who participated! And yes, that is a skull that was found during the clean-up!
Yesterday evening, our wonderful Director of Children’s Ministries, Melissa Miller, presented on her Arts Practicum at United Theological Seminary. Melissa completed this art series, “Sacred Holes: Learning Through Loss,” as part of her MA program with an arts and theology concentration. We are so thankful for all of the art that Melissa brings to RHUMC and beyond through the ArtReach program. Join us as we congratulate Melissa on this major milestone in her program and celebrate her art.

Due to inclement weather, Bowls for BrainPower has been rescheduled for tomorrow, Friday, April 12. Head to Diamondhead Education Center any time between 11am and 7pm. Make a free-will donation to our hunger cause and receive a beautiful, hand-made pottery bowl, and a meal of soup and bread.

Join us tonight as we continue our Season of Lament. We'll hear from two members of River Hills, Glenn Bottomly and John Siracusa. Glenn Bottomly grew up in the UMC at Normandale Hylands Church and John Siracusa grew up in the Roman Catholic Church. They shared a common bond in faith. They also shared a common strug- gle when the Churches they grew up in would not fully accept them when they came out as gay. They also shared the same fear when at different times they would walk into River Hills Church for the first time not knowing if they would be accepted. John and Glenn are members of River Hills UMC and were married on May 12, 2018. John and Glenn have been invited to share their lament in light of the decision made at the Special Session of General Conference in St. Louis on February 26th to limit United Methodist Churches and clergy from allowing LGBTQ+ from ordination and celebration of marriage.

Tonight's “Season of Lament” devotional time at 7:00pm will include a word from Julie Morgan, a member of River Hills UMC, who made the choice to be present for the Special General Conference Session in St. Louis two weeks ago. She will share with us why it was important for her to be there and her observations and experience. We will also get an update from our pastors after attending the Bishop’s meeting with the clergy on Monday.
Sunday, March 10, River Hills UMC WILL be postponing our morning worship to the afternoon: 3:00pm - Traditional Service, 5:30pm - Praise Service. We truly do not know what tomorrow will bring. This storm could be a non-event. It did not start as they anticipated, so it’s always possible that it could end with less impact than anticipated. It could also snow a lot and the rainwater could turn to ice overnight. The decision to postpone was based on which decision we might regret less. If anyone doesn't get the message, we'll make sure there is someone to welcome them. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding, and as always, we’d be happy to receive your feedback. If you know someone who might not get an email, give them a call tonight to let them know what’s happening. Thank you for helping us get the word out!
Ash Wednesday Service Tonight at 7:00pm Join us tonight as we begin our Season of Lament with Jeff Juliar sharing his thoughts and his story of growing up in the River Hills Church and how our church equipped him to be a man of faith. Pursuing ordination would not be an option in the denomination he grew up in as Jeff publicly came out in the late 70’s that he is gay. However, God’s faithfulness would lead him on a rich journey of ministry throughout his life. While Jeff currently lives in NYC with his life partner, Scott, he is back in town to be with his parents as they struggle with his father’s declining health. He graciously accepted our invitation to share his thoughts and story with us tonight. Join us at 7:00pm in the sanctuary at River Hills for an Ash Wednesday service that will also include Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes.
Please join us as we begin our Lenten journey tomorrow with our Ash Wednesday service at 7:00pm. Lent is a season during which we prepare for the celebration of Easter. This year, we are declaring Lent as a season of lament. As we prepare our hearts, we find ourselves in a time of acknowledging the ways we have caused the body of Christ to feel broken and excluded. We are creating a space for those who are directly affected by recent denominational decisions to share their stories with us. Bring your brokenness to worship as we seek our way and await the celebration of our faithful God together.

The Special Session of General Conference in St. Louis ended on Tuesday. Your pastors at River Hills have spent the past few days learning more about the decisions that were made, praying for our denomination, and pondering their response. We are so grateful that the Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge Choir came to share their music and stories with us during worship yesterday. What a blessing to hear their words of hope and healing.
